Rexer Chapter 2 Reflection

While reading this chapter, it reminded me of the argument discussed in the contemporary art class that no artwork is original. People live in the same world, we see many things every day. Some views are passively seen, some ideas are passively heard, and we are unconsciously influenced. Cliché is not something bad. I like the argument mentioned in the book, “the cliché can be an opening to a different point of view, a stimulus, even a guide to making pictures not yet seen.” Photos can be subjective similar, but we recontextualize and reassign significance, which is meaningful. Especially for the world of cell phone pictures, it is normal to see people taking photos at the same place and share these photos which only changing the subjects. Those are repetitive photos, but those are meaningful to people who are in the photo and who designs and creates the photo. At least it is a record that they have been to that place. The photograph can be documentary, but it does not mean that photography is a vehicle of universal truth. It can create something unrealistic or change the fact in the photo.

(During Covid-19, While Chinese people stayed at home, there was a trend online using bags of potato chips and washing machine drum to take photos.  p.s. Photos were collected online.)
